Don't Call Me Ishmael !

This week Iam reading a book called Don't Call Me Ishmael ! .It is a long read and it have 277. I think this is going to be a good read because there is a boy called Ismael and he hate the name Ishmael. He talls you how much he hate the name Ishmael.Iam only up to page 19 and the author is Michael Gerard Bauer and I hope he make more books like this.

Today I went swimming with my class we are doing a swimming competition and there are three teams one of then are red and blue and gold.My team is blue we have two competitions and one of then is swimming and the other is runing .My favourite one is swimming becaues Iam good at it .I wish that there was more competitions because I like them and if you come first or second and threed you get a litte cube to give your team points and we go down to The Manly pool to practice

The Melbourne Cup

Today is The Melbourne Cup and every year every class has a draw out of a hat and that's is how we get the horse.The Melbourne Cup is very famous in Australia and is held on the same day every year. Horses come from all over the world to race in this and this year I got Douro Valley and if he wins I will get a prize.Every class makes ties, hats for The Melbourne Cup day its really cool because everyone wears its, well not everyone. This is the tie I made.

This the ocean that flows on the Earth that we need.

This is the Bream that feeds on the Yabby, that lives in the ocean ,that flows on the Earth that we need.

This is the Tuna that eats the Bream, that feeds on the Yabby, that lives in the ocean ,that flows on the Earth that we need.

This is the Dolphin that swallows the Tuna ,that eats the Bream ,that feeds on the Yabby, that lives in the Ocean ,that flows on the Earth that we need.

This is the Great White Shark that devours the Dolphin, that swallows the Tuna, that eats the Bream, that feeds on the Yabby, that lives in the ocean, that flows on the Earth that we need.

My Holiday

On my school holiday I went to Melbourne City with my family. My Dad had been working there at the ANZ Bank and he is his own boss. My Mum wanted to go skiing even though she had a sore leg. It took 3 hours to get to Mount Bulla and the snow was soft at the bottom and hard at the top. We ski'd every day until my sister hurt her neck, but luckily she hurt it on the last day! Whooo! Some of the mountains were really steep and I was struggling to get down them. That was where my sister hurt herself. She was wearing my Dad's goggles and they fell off and her legs went out and she fell flat on her face. They had to tow her to the nearest medical centre where they put a brace on her neck. She was there for an hour and a half. She's ok now!

In Melbourne City we went to the movies and saw "Evan Almighty" and "Ratatouille". We also went to Phillip Island to see the penguins and the baby seagulls. It was really windy and blowy there! After seeing the penguins and seagulls we went to a little chocolate factory that had a cafe where we had lunch and of course I only bought white chocolate which was delicious because I only like white chocolate.

Back at Melbourne City my friends Sharon and Troy came over and we stayed up till 11 o'clock watching "The Flood". The next day we went to another cafe where we had lunch and we also went to a pub to play pool.

The next day we went to the airport and flew back to Brisbane. We were away for 2 weeks!

I Love That Dog by Sharon Creech

Love That Dog is about a boy who writes poems. The poems he write are about his dog. He got his dog from the pet store and he loved the dog very much. One day he was playing on the road with his friends when something very sad happened. All the girls in my class cried when they read this book. I didn't cry because I knew what was going to happen. I felt really sorry for the boy in the book because I would be really upset if that happened to me.

Lunar Eclipse

On the 28 of August 2007 The Lunar Eclipse will happen.At school we saw some of The other Eclipses on youtube. It was great and it said it was going to start at 6:50. I can't wait because the last Eclipse was in 2000 and if it is not cloudy it will be really good. I'm going get it on video and it told as it was going to go blood red.

My name is Dom and I'm a year 6 student and I go to a school in Queensland, Australia. My teacher's name is Mrs. J. I live near the bay and I like to play soccer and I'm on a team. My favourite subjects are Maths and Sports and I also like snow skiing. I usually go to Canberra to ski. It's really funny how my Mum screams when she's going down the slopes. My Dad has done it before, but he can't do any tricks because I think he's too old.

When I get older I'd like to play soccer for Australia or I'd like to be a ski racer. I'd probably have to move states for that!

I'm looking forward to going into year 7 so I can be a leader at our school, but I don't want to do the year 7 test and I'm not sure what high school I will go to yet. I like all my teachers at the moment so I hope I get some nice teachers at high school.(Not grumpy ones!)

A forAntarctica

A forAntarcica is about animals that live in Antarctica and people who have been there. An international organisation by the name of Greenpeace has a boat which takes an active role in the preservation of Antarctica as a wilderness environment.

I learned that Krill are tiny shrimp like creatures which live in the sea. They are the main food source for most of the fish, birds, seals and even the giant whales in Antarctica.

Penquins

Penquins are flightless, swimming birds and they are found only in the Southern Hemisphere. The Adelies and the Emperor are found only in the Antarctic, while the King Penquin is found in the sub-Antarctic.

A colony of nesting penquins live ins in a rookery. They lay their eggs on a pile of small stones and they defend their territory vigorously.

Huskies

Huskies were first used in the Artic and Antarctica in 1898. These dogs were used because they were used to the snow, ice and cold weather. They have a thick double layered coat that makes them suitable for the cold weather. Huskies can pull from 50 to 90 kilograms. They are good working in teams and are very loyal companions. In 1991 all introduced species including huskies were banned from Antarctica, only man is allowed to go there. In 1993, the old dogs were sent to Australia to live out their days, while the younger working dogs were sent to Minnesota in the USA so they could keep working.

My name is Seth and I am a farmer who grows crops near this great river called The Nile. We call these banks of the Nile, the Black Land because of the mud that washes downstream from Africa.This fertile soil is created when the summer rains come and flood this area. This land stays underwater until Autumn. By November this ground is ready for planting and sowing.I grow wheat and barley in my fields. I scatter my seeds over the soil and make my goats and sheep trample on it. This saves me from having to plant each seed.Farmers like me dig canals to bring water to the fields in the dry times. To get the water from the river, to fill the canals and water my crops, I use a special tool called a shaduf. The shaduf has a bucket on one end of a pole and a heavy weight at the other.

First the weight is pushed up so the bucket goes down into the river. As the weight is pulled down, it lifts up a full bucket of water that can be swung around and emptied into the canal. If the crops are not watered, they will die and people will go hungry.The crops are usually cut in March and April before it gets too hot. The ears of wheat and barley are cut off with a sickle made from wood and hard stone.It’s hard work being a farmer in Egypt!

The Nile River

The Nile River is located in Africa and is 6,695km long and flows through nine countries. It is one of the biggest rivers in the world. The northern section of the Nile River flows almost entirely through desert, from Sudan into Egypt, a country whose civilization has depended on the river since ancient times. Nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along the banks of the river.

The Nile River was the basis of the Egyptian’s whole way of life. It was important to the Ancient Egyptians for a number of reasons. They used the mud for buildings, the water for irrigating and fertilizing their crops and also for bathing and washing. In addition the river was important for transport.

To build their houses the Egyptians relied on the Nile River to make the materials they needed. The Egyptians used mud from the Nile and placed it into little cubes. They then dried the bricks in the sun until they were ready to use. Limestone, sandstone and granite were quarried from the hills above the Nile and brought down to be used for buildings.
The Nile River was also crucial to the Egyptians for farming. The fertile soil around the Nile was created when floods that came with the summer rains which occurred in mid June and July gave the land valuable nutrients in order for the Egyptians to grow crops. Some of the crops grown by the Egyptians were wheat, fruit and vegetables. Irrigation canals were also dug from the river to irrigate the crops. Agriculture was the major economic activity of Ancient Egyptians.
The ancient Egyptians used the Nile River for transportation purposes. The Egyptians were able to transport big rocks and stones on large vessels to where it was needed for buildings. People of importance would use the river to journey to different cities and towns. The Egyptians were able to travel along the Nile to intermingle with other civilizations of Egypt.
Bathing and washing was very significant as the ancient Egyptians believed in keeping clean. They would use water from the Nile to wash their clothes every day. As water was precious to the Egyptians, they saved their bath water to water the fields.
The Nile River was a significant river for the Ancient Egyptians because they used it for building, farming, transportation and bathing. Egyptian life centered around the Nile river and was the heart of Ancient Egypt.
